Is Jaipur Living a good rug brand?
In my experience, Jaipur Living is one of the best rug brands, but you still need to be a savvy consumer and understand what you’re buying.
The first thing I tell customers to look at is rug construction.
More than almost anything else, the construction tells me what kind of rug you’re getting, what level of quality to expect, how it’s likely to wear and whether shedding may be an issue.
Jaipur Living has an enormous assortment spanning different constructions and price points, so I wouldn’t judge the entire brand based on one rug. Look at the individual rug and how it’s made.
Are Jaipur Living rugs good quality?
Jaipur Living rugs can be fantastic quality.
But one thing I appreciate about Jaipur is that even their more affordable rugs are very design-driven. If you’re in a season of life where you just want something beautiful, affordable and a little more “cheap and cheerful,” there are some wonderful options.
And when you’re ready to invest, Jaipur Living also produces some truly beautiful higher-end rugs.
That’s one reason I like the brand: there’s a Jaipur rug for very different homes, budgets and seasons of life.
Are Jaipur Living rugs worth the money?
Absolutely.
In particular, I think Jaipur Living offers some of the best value I’ve encountered in hand-knotted rugs.
One thing my customers and I consistently love about Jaipur Living’s hand-knotted wool rugs is how many of them are genuinely soft to the touch.
Customers will come into our showroom, feel one and immediately say:
“Wow. This is actually soft.”
That matters.
Wool rugs can sometimes have a reputation for feeling coarse or scratchy, but Jaipur Living has some beautiful wool qualities and pile constructions that feel wonderful underfoot.
I also think Jaipur does an exceptional job with color.
They occupy this really interesting contemporary-artisan space. You’ll see rugs with Moroccan and global influences, but they don’t necessarily make a room feel overly themed or “global.” The overall aesthetic can still feel very clean, modern and elevated.
Beautiful colors, beautiful materials, wonderful texture—and many of them wear extremely well.
Why are some Jaipur Living rugs $500 and others $10,000?
It largely comes down to three things:
Material, construction and size.
The type and quality of wool or other fibers matter. The amount of handwork involved matters enormously. And, of course, a larger rug requires substantially more material and labor.
A machine-made rug and a hand-knotted wool rug may both say “Jaipur Living” on the label, but they are fundamentally different products.
That’s why I always tell customers:
Don’t shop the brand name alone. Shop the construction.
What’s the difference between Jaipur Living and Enkay?
Jaipur Living and Enkay are related brands within the same broader company.
Jaipur Living has traditionally been heavily oriented toward the design trade and retail partners, while Enkay has a more direct-to-consumer presence.
If you encounter similar aesthetics or products while shopping the two brands, that relationship is part of the reason.
Jaipur Living vs. Loloi: which is better?
I can’t pick a favorite!
I have favorite rugs from Jaipur Living and favorite rugs from Loloi.
They’re both excellent brands, but I think they excel in different areas and aesthetics. Rather than saying one brand is universally “better,” I would choose based on the particular rug, construction and look you’re trying to achieve.

Which Jaipur Living rugs look the most expensive in person?
Honestly?
Their hand-knotted rugs.
Hand-knotted construction creates a depth and variation that’s very difficult to reproduce in a less expensive rug.
Jaipur Living’s hand-knotted rugs often combine beautiful wool, sophisticated color and really lovely texture. In my experience, they look and feel appropriately luxurious in person.
They’re also some of the hand-knotted rugs I return to again and again when I’m looking for strong value within that category.

What’s the difference between hand-knotted, hand-tufted, handwoven and power-loomed rugs?
This is one of the most important things to understand when shopping for a rug.
Power-Loomed Rugs
Power-loomed rugs are produced mechanically rather than individually knotted by hand.
They can be an excellent choice when you’re looking for something affordable, practical and design-driven—what I sometimes call “cheap and cheerful.”
They’re particularly useful when you want the look without making a major investment.
Handwoven Rugs
I personally love handwoven rugs.
They can have beautiful natural texture, and many of the constructions we specify experience relatively little shedding.
I think of these as workhorse rugs.
They aren’t necessarily trying to be the rock star of the room. Instead, they provide beautiful texture and grounding.
I love them under dining tables, in entries, rec rooms and large living spaces. They’re also particularly helpful when you need a large size, such as a 12’ × 15’, and want natural material and texture without moving into the price point of a comparable hand-knotted rug.
Hand-Tufted Rugs
Hand-tufted rugs are more controversial for me.
Personally, I tend to stay away from them when specifying rugs for Amethyst projects.
Depending on the particular construction, I’ve experienced more shedding and maintenance with tufted rugs than I prefer. Some also have looped textures that can be problematic in homes with pets.
That doesn’t mean every hand-tufted rug is bad. It means that, given a choice between constructions, it’s generally not where I prefer to put my clients’ rug budget.
Hand-Knotted Rugs
Hand-knotted is my favorite rug construction.
These rugs are made by skilled artisans tying individual knots to create the rug. That amount of handwork is one reason they take so long to produce and cost considerably more.
The construction allows for incredibly detailed patterns, beautiful color variation and a level of character that’s difficult to duplicate mechanically.
They can also be extraordinarily durable.
Custom hand-knotted sizes are possible in some programs, but because the rug has to be made by hand, lead times can easily stretch for many months.
For my own interior design projects, hand-knotted is the construction I specify most often when the budget allows.
How can I tell if a Jaipur Living rug is high quality?
Start with the construction.
Jaipur Living produces rugs across multiple price categories, and I wouldn’t necessarily describe the affordable ones as “bad quality.” They’re simply made differently and intended to hit a different price point.
Personally, I’m most cautious with hand-tufted construction because of my experience with shedding and maintenance.
If you want to understand the quality of a particular Jaipur rug, don’t just look at the photograph.
Look at:
Construction → fiber content → pile → backing → care instructions.
Those details tell you much more.
Which Jaipur Living rugs are the softest?
One thing I particularly love about Jaipur Living is that many of their wool rugs are surprisingly soft.
Their wool selection and pile construction can create a much softer feel than people expect from a natural wool rug.

Do Jaipur Living wool rugs shed?
It depends heavily on construction.
In our experience, hand-tufted rugs tend to be the category where we’re most likely to encounter noticeable shedding.
With many of the hand-knotted and handwoven rugs we sell, shedding is substantially less of a concern, although some initial shedding can be normal with natural wool.
Again: construction matters.
What Jaipur Living rugs are best for dogs and pets?
If the budget allows, I love a well-constructed hand-knotted wool rug for homes with pets.
Wool is an incredibly practical natural fiber, and a quality hand-knotted rug can withstand years of real life.
At a more accessible price point, certain power-loomed rugs can also be extremely practical because you’re not making the same financial investment and many are designed for easier everyday maintenance.
I tend to be more cautious about looped and heavily tufted constructions around pets, particularly animals whose claws can catch the surface.
Which Jaipur Living rugs are best for kids and families?
At Amethyst, we usually tell families:
Buy the best rug construction your budget comfortably allows.
For me, that’s often hand-knotted wool.
I know that sounds counterintuitive—people sometimes think having children means they should buy the cheapest rug possible—but a well-made wool rug can be remarkably resilient.
If a hand-knotted rug isn’t realistic for this season of life, Jaipur Living also has beautiful more affordable constructions. You don’t have to spend thousands to have a room that looks great.
Are Jaipur Living rugs easy to clean?
Many of them are, but cleaning depends entirely on the specific fiber and construction.
One reason I love quality wool rugs is that wool can be remarkably forgiving in real life. Small spills can often be addressed successfully when they’re treated promptly and according to the manufacturer’s care instructions.
For more significant cleaning, particularly with an investment-quality hand-knotted rug, I recommend following the care instructions for that specific rug or using a professional familiar with fine rugs.
Never assume that one cleaning method is appropriate for every rug.
Which Jaipur Living rugs should I avoid in high-traffic areas?
Personally, I’m cautious about certain hand-tufted rugs in extremely high-traffic environments.
It’s not necessarily because they’re unattractive—they can be gorgeous.
It’s because shedding and surface wear are things you’re going to notice more quickly when a rug is constantly being walked across.
For a hardworking space, I tend to prefer a construction selected specifically for durability and maintenance.
Do Jaipur Living rug colors look different in person than online?
Absolutely.
But I would say this about every rug brand.
Computer screens, photography, lighting and surrounding finishes all affect how a rug appears.
One thing I’ve noticed specifically with Jaipur Living is that some rugs that photograph fairly yellow or golden online can look cleaner and more ivory in person.
Remember that natural wool isn’t necessarily going to be stark white. It naturally has warmth and variation.
That’s one reason I love samples whenever they’re available.

Personally, I also really trust unedited iPhone photos when I’m evaluating rug color.
I tend to see the world through the lens of an iPhone, so those colors make sense to my eye. Sometimes I find a simple iPhone photo taken in a real room much more useful than a professionally lit and edited stock photograph.

Should I order a Jaipur Living rug sample before buying?
Yes, please.
I really think samples help, especially if you’re sensitive to subtle differences in undertones and color.
There are exceptions. We’ve used certain Jaipur Living rugs time and time again, and we know them extremely well.
If you send me a photo of your room through the chat on our website and I tell you, “You need this rug,” there’s probably a reason. I’ve likely used it before and already know what it’s going to do for the room.
If you’re very color-sensitive, definitely order the sample.

What size Jaipur Living rug should I buy for my living room?
In living rooms, bigger is usually better.
Some of the sizes we commonly specify are:

12’ × 15’
10’ × 14’
9’ × 12’
A 9’ × 12’ is a very common living room size, but larger rooms often need considerably larger rugs than people initially expect.
If you think your living room needs something smaller than a 9’ × 12’, I would pause before ordering and double-check the dimensions with a designer or with us.
One of the easiest ways to make an otherwise beautiful living room feel disconnected is to use a rug that’s simply too small for the furniture arrangement.
Which Jaipur Living rugs work best in a luxury home?
This is one of my strongest opinions about rugs:
The rug has an enormous effect on the perceived quality of the entire room.
If you’ve invested in beautiful natural stone, Taj Mahal quartzite, patinated brass lighting, custom cabinetry and quality furniture, putting an inexpensive-looking power-loomed rug in the middle of that room can bring down the overall design.
There’s absolutely a time and place for an affordable rug. Not every room needs an investment piece, and not everyone wants to spend thousands of dollars on a rug.
But when I’m designing a luxury room, the rug is one of the places I don’t like to compromise.
And the reverse is also true.
You can have a house that hasn’t been updated recently, add a gorgeous hand-knotted wool rug, and suddenly the entire room can feel more collected, intentional and editorial.
In my opinion, rugs have one of the greatest effects on the perceived value of a room.
You can thrift incredible artwork. You can find vintage accessories. You can save on certain pieces of furniture and lighting. There are plenty of places where a talented shopper can spend less without necessarily making a room look less expensive.
Rugs are different.
A beautiful rug can elevate everything sitting on top of it. The wrong rug can make beautiful furniture and finishes feel less special.
That’s why, in our luxury projects, I strongly prefer natural wool and hand-knotted rugs whenever the budget allows.
Which Jaipur Living rugs look vintage or one-of-a-kind?
Look for rugs with intricate patterns, asymmetry, tonal variation and Persian- or Turkish-inspired motifs.
Those details can give a new rug some of the character we associate with antique and vintage textiles.
The great thing about Jaipur Living is that they interpret this look across multiple price points.
You can find vintage-inspired aesthetics in their more accessible constructions all the way through their investment-level hand-knotted rugs.
So if you love the collected, antique-rug look, Jaipur Living gives you plenty of options regardless of budget.

Are expensive wool rugs actually more durable than inexpensive rugs?
They certainly can be—and this is one of the biggest misconceptions I encounter when people shop for rugs.
People sometimes assume:
Cheap rug = practical and easy to clean.
Expensive rug = precious and difficult to live with.
In my experience, that can be almost completely backwards.
A high-quality hand-knotted wool rug can be remarkably durable and forgiving. Wool is a wonderful material for real life, and a well-constructed rug can be professionally cleaned and maintained for many years.
That’s one of the reasons these rugs have historically been passed down rather than treated as disposable decor.
Obviously, no rug is stain-proof, and you should always follow the care instructions for the particular piece. But if I’m choosing a rug for longevity, I’d much rather invest in quality wool and construction than assume the least expensive rug will be the most practical.
