How to Measure Your Space for the Perfect Rug Size

Amethyst Design Tip Series

Rugs are our love language, and finding the perfect color, texture, and size is our specialty! Different factors play into the rules of measuring for the perfect rug size. There are general best practices we like to follow when partnering with our clients for room designs.

How to measure your space for the perfect rug size

Measure by Furniture Size

The rug should go at least halfway underneath all seating and furniture and ideally extend 12” - 18” inches past the edge of the furniture. Start by measuring 12” - 18” inches past the end of the furniture in the seating area to obtain the length and width of the space. Standard rug sizes typically fit most seating areas.

Amethyst Design Pro Tip:

Don’t overcomplicate it. Rugs come in a variety of standard sizes. Some will be 8x10 and some will be 7’6” x 9’6”, it depends on how the rug is woven. Don’t worry about a few inches. Our goal is always to find you the size you need in a ready-to-ship size, however, we do have custom options as well!

Measure by Room Size

For the perfect rug fit, start by measuring the overall size of the room. Leave 12” - 18” inches of floor showing on all edges of the room. We like to leave 36” inches of open wood floor walkways between zones.

Amethyst Design Pro Tip:

For larger spaces, mix and match rugs within the same space and prioritize rugs in entryways and seating areas to create intentionally focused spaces.
