Home Tour: Behind the California Farmhouse Aesthetic

California Farmhouse by Amethyst x Highland Builders

We partnered with Highland Builders to provide the furnishing design for this California Farmhouse aesthetic. This project was a joy to partner with the Highland Omaha Builder’s team. The architecture and bones of the home were stunning, which made it easy to find pieces to accentuate the moody cabinetry and light and bright open space.

The home was surrounded by beautiful trees, neighborhood walking trails, and a peaceful natural atmosphere which made the California Farmhouse aesthetic a perfect fit for the furnishing design.

What is the California Farmhouse aesthetic?

California Farmhouse combines warm California-inspired pieces with cozy midwestern vibes. The home's architecture is light and airy and features lighter wood and various furnishing pieces that accentuate the home's architecture.

For the California farmhouse look, we wanted to do a warmer look to match the home's light and airy architecture. To fit the aesthetic, we featured hand-knotted wool rugs, layered rugs, one-of-a-kind vintage rugs, and warm white oak.
Our furnishing design approach to newly built homes is to mix and match new and fresh pieces with wabi-sabi and reclaimed elements for balance. The soul of a curated home is stronger with just the right balance of mixed and matched modern elements and wabi-sabi natural raw pieces.

California Farmhouse Living Room Furnishing DesignLiving Room

The living area is the first thing seen after entering this California Farmhouse style home so we wanted it to really make an impression and feel warm, welcoming, and inviting. The living room has a beautiful light grey-toned fireplace standing between beautiful deep charcoal cabinetry. A fireplace this inviting needed an oversized art piece to compliment the warm to cool tones which made the Misty Sea perfect to sit above the white oak mantle.

Mahogany Boomerang Table - Large Between the seating area, we opted to pair the set of large Mahogany Boomerang and small Mahogany Boomerang coffee tables, and especially love the reeded details. We paired the cozy Gidget Sheepskin sofa with the modern reclined Arnett chairs for a mixture of warm and cool tones, and to provide both a soft and firm seating option.
Arnett ChairThe Arnett chairs were a perfect fit, because they allowed an open space to walk into the seating area, and they have a beautiful back with a leather detail so we did not have to worry about the back of the furniture showing.
hand-knotted layered 100% wool rugs California FarmhouseTo make the open seating area welcoming and open, and to add an elevated look to the space, we layered two hand-knotted rugs. The Heirloom Bone Charcoal rug on top of the Jenny Oatmeal rug compliment the warm and cool balance of the space, they're perfect for high-traffic areas, have limited shedding, prevent furniture from sliding across the wood floors, and they easily clean with soap and water! They're functional and aesthetically pleasing-- this dynamic duo is a win-win!
Artisan Shelf Styling California Farmhouse VibesThe Highland Builder's team picked out this beautiful paint color for the cabinetry, and we really wanted to go all in to play up the California Farmhouse vibe! We mixed fresh and new pieces with artisan-crafted charcoal pots and natural-weaved elements-- it's all about the details!

The layered rugs look amazing under the seating area, and provide a visual guide to separate seating spaces in the open floor concept.

Marco Tobacco / Mocha Hand-Knotted RugEntry Way

In an open concept, mixing and matching rugs is an art. When rugs in different spaces in an open floor plan can all be seen at the same time, we like to mix and match styles and tones.

For the entryway, our rug experts opted to use the Marco hand-knotted rug for a welcoming feel. It’s great for high-traffic areas and was the perfect pile height for the door to glide over. This rug adds an elevated look to the first entry point of the home and helps to set the stage for the California Farmhouse aesthetic.

California Farmhouse Primary Bedroom FurniturePrimary Bedroom

The primary bedroom is a California Farmhouse curated oasis with a large hand-woven rug, oh-so-comfortable linens, and mixed and matched-white oaks and dark mahogany pieces. The warm wood wall paneling, off-white walls, large bright windows, and beautiful white oak floors tell an inviting story, and we wanted to really lean into the mixed tones.  Bowen Bed
The Bowen bed has a stunning white oak finish offset by a creamy boucle fabric, and the linen bedding is the perfect texture and softness to rest in after a long day.

We paired the bed with two Nordic II white oak bedside tables and grounded them on the Priya hand-woven rug. These bedside tables are a timeless design, pairing elegant lines with the natural purity of solid wood.

Aurora Swivel Chair Cloud Oversized Art Bedroom Furniture

Opposite of the bed, we paired two oh-so-soft boucle Aurora swivel chairs between a Mesa Table for a space to relax before bed. To take the design one step further, we placed an oversized Cloudscape art behind the swivel chairs for a relaxing escape.

The Highland Builder's team designed this beautifully detailed island, paired with gold and white light fixtures to hang over the bar seating. We wanted to include backless seating to allow the details of the island to shine through.

The Becca counter stools are made with a soft, cozy, and creamy boucle fabric, and add a cool contrast to the island. These stools were a perfect fit to allow a place to sit on the island for good conversation while dinner was prepared. We especially love the detail of the legs that continue halfway up the seat for an added touch!
california farmhouse kitchen shelf stylingOur styling rule of thumb is to use elements that are both functional and practical. For this California Farmhouse kitchen shelving, we opted to include a family dinner cookbook, beech wood dish brushes, and artisan-crafted vases and baskets for a natural farmhouse element.
California farmhouse kitchen with a one of a kind vintage rugWe opted to place this one-of-a-kind vintage runner in the kitchen. Kitchen runners should compliment the kitchen's architecture, and not overpower the design.

With the open floor concept, it was important to match all the rugs in the space that could be seen at the same time. With a traditional pattern and lighter tones, we knew this was the perfect runner.  It's functional, durable, and liveable, and compliments the California Farmhouse vibe in this open floor concept.

California Farmhouse Dining FurnitureDining

The dining room features oversized windows and a sliding glass door that leads to the backdoor patio, allowing beautiful views and amazing natural light to shine through. The white oak pillars add a special touch to the details of the vaulted ceiling. To complement the Highland Builder’s team’s architectural design, we opted to pair warmer and cooler tones. The mixture of darker and lighter woods created a warm and inviting dining experience for all to enjoy.
oversized kitchen dining chairsWe opted for the extendable Oak Bok dining table for plenty of family dining space and paired it with these cozy vintage oversized Kena natural dining chairs and grounded it on the yummy, creamy hand-woven Brook’s Stone rug. We love the natural vintage look of the dining chairs, and the oversized black leather sling-style seating will make you never want to leave the dining table.
california farmhouse stylingThe extendable dining table ensures enough space for seasonal styling. To complete the California Farmhouse aesthetic, we opted to include functional elements. In the center of the dining table, you'll find an artisan-crafted vase securing baby's breath and small white side dishes on top of a natural light oak board.
Kitchen and Dining Art WorkAcross from the sliding glass door, we added the Soundlessness of Nature II art piece to add a nature-inspired element to carry peacefulness and tranquility to the space. We especially loved the way this art complemented the space, and did not overpower the room.

The Highland Builder’s team knocked it out of the park with the lower level, complete with two bedrooms, a private office space, a home gym, and a wet bar area perfect for hosting and entertaining guests on game nights.

The wet bar’s detailed cabinets and island mix warm inviting tones with white oak finishes. We opted to place these stunning Antonia counter stools to play up the white oak finishes. These counter stools feature a fun retro look to the bar seating.
lower level dining california farmhouse white oakWe opted for a white oak dining table for family game nights and festivities, and grounded it on a mixed tonal hand-knotted rug to secure the furniture in place, and visually separate the seating areas in the large open area. The white oak dining table is functional, and durable, and provides additional space for seasonal decorating.

We styled the table with a wabi-sabi artisan-crafted tray for a natural look and stark contrast against the lighter oak table. As an added touch to the scene, we added the Disentangled Thoughts art piece for a neutral abstract vibe.

Oak Osso Stool Dining California Farmhouse

For game night seating, we opted for these white oak stools for their comfortability and functional versatility.

Lower Level Seating

A great entertainment space needs great functional seating. We mixed and matched seating tones and textures and paired the Grant Armless Slipcovered Sectional with the Braden Dakota recliner and a Anniston Andes ottoman for plentiful oh-so-comfy seating.

We grounded the seating area on an Amethyst favorite hand-knotted rug. The grays and charcoal tones of the rug balance well with the oatmeal sectional and creamy boucle ottoman. Above the sofa, we opted for the Wild Wild West Art piece to add a nature-inspired element to the atmosphere.

Amber Lewis x Loloi Amber Lewis Carla Pal0030 Ivory / Black Pillow

We are obsessed with the tones and softness of the Amber Carla pillows, and loved the stunning cozy, and inviting warmth they added to this sectional.
