In my experience, Verellen furniture is the ultimate quality. It’s the best of the best.
There’s a reason the Verellen showroom in High Point is a destination for designers—even designers who don’t sell the line. They consistently create something fresh.
The silhouettes feel original. The materials are beautiful. And their furniture doesn’t look like everything else that’s already on the market.
For me, that’s one of the biggest differences between Verellen and many other luxury furniture manufacturers: you’re not simply paying for better construction. You’re paying for original design.
Is Verellen furniture worth the money?
Absolutely.
You see the value in the details: the unusual textiles they source, the beautiful treatment of walnut and ash, their custom stain mixtures and those absolutely breathtaking original silhouettes.
To me, Verellen is the kind of furniture that can change the feeling of an entire project.
It’s the quality level that can help a room feel editorial enough to belong in a magazine, but there’s also something incredibly calm about it. The materials, proportions and silhouettes can make a space feel quiet and luxurious without needing to scream for attention.
For the right project, Verellen is absolutely worth the investment.
Why is Verellen furniture so expensive?
Verellen furniture is made in High Point, North Carolina, using skilled craftspeople and high-quality materials.
You’re also buying furniture with an extraordinary amount of design behind it.
The silhouettes are distinctive. The wood finishes are beautiful. The textiles are unusual. And the furniture has a level of craftsmanship that you simply aren’t going to find in mass-produced upholstery.
This is one of those categories where, in my experience, you get what you pay for.
It’s a fantastic line.
What are the most comfortable Verellen sofas?
Oh my gosh, there are so many.
I think the internet would probably tell you that the Duke is one of the most popular Verellen sofas.
Personally, my favorite in the Amethyst showroom is the Thibaut Sofa.
It has this gorgeous waterfall cushion, and I love the way it balances comfort with structure.
That’s actually something I tend to prefer about Verellen. I’m not necessarily looking for a sofa that screams “LOOK HOW PLUSH I AM.” I love their ability to combine something tailored and architectural with something incredibly comfortable.
The Esme is a perfect example.
It has this juxtaposition of a very firm, tailored back with an absolutely plush, juicy seat. I love that combination.
Thibaut almost gives you the opposite experience. It has this wonderfully plush back—and those might be the heaviest back cushions I’ve ever handled.
Whenever I pull a back cushion off a Verellen sofa, I feel like I’m doing a workout. They’re so structurally dense and substantial, yet still incredibly comfortable.
Another lesser-used Verellen sofa that I absolutely love is the Clemence.
Clemence has a firmer, more Italian sit that I think is divine. The arms angle slightly inward, which gives it this incredibly chic silhouette.
I’ve seen Clemence upholstered with a clean bench seat for a very seamless, modern look. I’ve also seen it quilted in leather, which is absolutely gorgeous.
In leather, I particularly love it for a modern-rustic mountain home—Wyoming, Utah, Colorado—that kind of environment.
And I also love the Theo.
Honestly, I could nerd out about Verellen sofas all day.
What are the most comfortable Verellen chairs?
I actually think chairs are one of Verellen’s secret weapons.
And if you’re trying to balance your furniture budget, this is one of my favorite design strategies.
Buy a really strong pair of Verellen chairs and pair them with a simpler track-arm sofa.
I hear the same thing from couples all the time when they’re furniture shopping:
“My husband needs to sit on the sofa before we’ll order it.”
Or it’s the wife. Either way, someone needs to test-drive the sofa. 😂
And that’s okay.
Go sit on sofas locally. Find a clean, neutral sofa from a brand you’re comfortable buying.
Then put the personality into the room with Verellen chairs.
Those chairs can give you the attitude, originality and design you’re craving without making the purchase feel quite as risky as ordering a sofa you’ve never sat on.
They’re comfortable, but more importantly, their silhouettes can completely change the room.
What are the best Verellen sofas and sectionals?
Honestly, their entire line is incredibly strong.
Verellen has some fantastic modular pieces with unusual curves and configurations. They also incorporate interesting elements like end-table blocks that allow you to create much more architectural sectional arrangements.
But one of the things that ultimately makes Verellen upholstery so special is the textile you put on it.
The frame and construction matter enormously, of course, but fabric selection can completely transform the final piece.
A Verellen sofa isn’t simply a sofa you pick from a photograph. You’re creating a combination of silhouette + proportion + construction + textile, and that’s where the magic happens.
Which Verellen sofa is best for lounging?
I’m obsessed with the Esme.
It’s low, sexy and sinky.
That’s the simplest way I can describe it.
If you’re looking for something relaxed and genuinely comfortable for lounging—but still want a sofa that feels incredibly designed—Esme is one of my favorites.
Which Verellen sofa is best if I want a deeper seat?
A lot of my taller clients absolutely love Verellen because many of their sofas naturally have a deeper, more European-style sit.
If you’re tall and constantly feel like standard sofas are too shallow for your body, Verellen is absolutely a brand I would look at.
Some Verellen silhouettes are also available in what they call a Club configuration.
The Club versions generally give you a somewhat more upright, American-style sitting experience compared with the deeper European proportions associated with some of their standard silhouettes.
So if you’re tall and love a deep sofa, Verellen can be fantastic.
If you’re shorter or simply prefer to sit more upright, don’t write the brand off—we just need to direct you toward the right silhouette and configuration.
Which Verellen sofa is best if I don’t want an overly deep seat?
One of our go-to recommendations is the Theo Club Sofa.
It gives you that Verellen design and quality but with a more upright sitting experience.
This is where I think working with someone who actually knows the line becomes really valuable.
You don’t need to look at Verellen’s dimensions and try to reverse-engineer whether you’re going to like sitting on the sofa.
Tell us:
“I’m short and hate deep sofas.”
Or:
“I’m 6’4” and want something I can actually lounge on.”
Those statements are much more useful to us than simply asking, “What’s the best Verellen sofa?”
Are Verellen sofas soft or firm?
Both.
Verellen sofas can range from structured and supportive to incredibly relaxed and sinky. It depends on the particular silhouette and how that piece was designed.
One important thing to understand about Verellen is that they don’t simply let us swap cushion constructions around to make every sofa softer or firmer.
The cushion is part of the design.
Verellen has considered how that cushion works with the arms, back, seat height, depth and overall silhouette. Changing the cushion would change the experience they designed.
Personally, I respect that.
Rather than trying to turn one Verellen sofa into something it isn’t, we help you find the Verellen sofa that was already designed to sit the way you like to sit.

What are the best Verellen fabrics?
Oh, I have so many favorites.
When I’m starting a Verellen project, there are a handful of fabrics I find myself returning to again and again.
Rustic Linen is always a wonderful place to start.
Cleary is another favorite, particularly if you’re looking for a lower-grade fabric that still gives you a beautiful, elevated look. It has some lovely natural-looking variation that works really well on Verellen’s silhouettes.
I also love the Aridobouclés.
And I love, love, love Cuddles.
Cuddles is difficult to describe until you touch it. It’s furry without really feeling like faux fur, and I basically can’t stop running my fingers through it whenever I’m around it. 😂 It has this strange, imperfect, almost wabi-sabi quality that I absolutely love.
Adina is another favorite, as is Campo.
Really, I’m drawn to anything with a slightly unusual texture.
That’s one of my biggest pieces of advice when choosing a Verellen fabric: don’t be afraid of texture.
Verellen creates such original furniture silhouettes that an interesting textile can make the shape of the piece even more striking. Sometimes putting an overly basic fabric on an extraordinary frame misses part of what makes Verellen so special.
For velvet, I love the Banks collection.
And if you’re looking for something truly special, Verellen has a fantastic mohair called Nevada Brown Sugar that’s an Amethyst favorite.
There are hundreds of options, so these aren’t the only Verellen fabrics I recommend. They’re simply some of the places I naturally start.
What are the best Verellen fabrics for kids and families?
Honestly, a lot more of the Verellen fabric library is family-friendly than people assume.
I wouldn’t automatically limit yourself to something labeled “performance” just because you have children.
Instead, look at the actual fiber content and cleaning instructions.
Where I become much more cautious in a family environment is with fibers that have significant limitations around moisture or cleaning, such as certain silks and viscose-heavy textiles.
That’s when real life can become more challenging.
But there are plenty of beautiful natural Verellen fabrics that I would be completely comfortable putting into a family home.

Do Verellen linen sofas hold up well?
In my experience, yes—extremely well.
And I have a very specific reason for saying that.
We regularly hear from customers who have owned a Verellen sofa for 10 years, sometimes even approaching 20 years, and they’re contacting us because they want replacement slipcovers made.
Here’s the part I find most compelling:
They had linen before, and they want linen again.
To me, that’s one of the strongest endorsements a textile can receive.
If you’ve actually lived with a linen sofa for a decade or longer and, when it’s finally time to refresh it, you choose linen again—that tells me considerably more than a fabric specification ever could.
Linen is supposed to live.
It relaxes. It develops character. It’s not meant to look like a perfectly untouched synthetic textile forever.
For the right customer, that’s part of what makes a Verellen linen sofa so beautiful.
Should I choose performance fabric or natural linen on a Verellen sofa?
Personally, I wouldn’t automatically choose performance fabric just because it sounds like the safest option.
Verellen does offer performance textiles, and there are certainly households and applications where they make sense.
But one of the reasons I love Verellen is their fabric library.
They source incredibly beautiful, forgiving, textural materials, and I think limiting yourself immediately to the performance category can mean overlooking some of the textiles that make Verellen furniture so special.
Natural linen can be an incredible choice.
Rather than shopping based solely on the word “performance,” I recommend looking at:
Fiber content.
Texture.
Cleaning instructions.
How you actually use the room.
Do you have young children? Dogs? Cats? Is this the sofa everyone eats dinner on while watching television, or is it sitting in a formal living room?
Those answers matter.

I’d rather help you understand the fabric you actually love than automatically put every family into a generic performance textile.
Can I order Verellen fabric samples before buying?
Yes. We’ve got you. Go crazy.
We have Verellen fabric samples available through our website, so if you already know what you want, you can simply order samples without needing to have a conversation with anyone first.
But if you want help, this is one of my favorite things to do.
Customers will often send us a photograph of their room and say:
“Can you send me four to six Verellen fabrics that you think would work here?”
Absolutely.
I’ll personally select a group of samples based on your room, your colors and the look you’re trying to achieve before we send them out.
It’s a really easy, low-pressure way to get a little bit of personal design help without turning fabric selection into a giant project.
How long does a Verellen sofa last?
In my experience, Verellen furniture can last for decades.
I’ve been selling Verellen for nine years, and I’ve never had one of my customers come back because the Verellen sofa they purchased from me simply reached the end of its useful life and needed to be replaced.
The replacement inquiries we receive tend to involve Verellen furniture that’s 10, 15, even 20 years old.
And frequently there’s an unusual reason for the replacement—a flood, a major event in the home, a remodel—or the customer simply wants new slipcovers after living with the original upholstery for many years.
You can even find older Verellen pieces being resold through luxury vintage and collectible furniture marketplaces.
To me, that says something.
Verellen isn’t disposable furniture.
When you invest in it, you’re buying something intended to live in your home for a very long time.
Of course, exactly how long any piece lasts depends on how you live, how heavily it’s used and how you care for it. But based on what I’ve experienced over nine years of selling the brand, longevity is one of the reasons I feel comfortable recommending the investment.
Does Verellen furniture hold its shape, or does it get wrinkled and relaxed?
I’m going to be very honest about this because it’s important to understand what you’re buying.
Verellen’s tailoring is extraordinary.
Their craftspeople are incredibly skilled at fitting a textile to a piece of furniture. There’s almost a couture quality to it—the fabric is being tailored specifically to that silhouette.
But beautiful tailoring does not mean natural materials are going to look completely untouched forever.
Linen relaxes.
Down compresses.
Fabric wrinkles.
Cushions show evidence that human beings actually sit on them.
That’s normal.
How much relaxation you see depends heavily on the materials you choose.
A heavier linen will generally maintain a more tailored appearance and can often be steamed when needed.
A thinner, more relaxed linen is going to give you more of that rumpled, puckered, lived-in look. For the right room, that can be absolutely gorgeous.
Cushion construction matters too.
When I first opened Amethyst, I had a gentleman purchase a Verellen sofa. He sat in the exact same spot every night to watch television.
About three months later, he contacted me because there was a slight divot where he always sat.
That’s normal.
If you have down or feather in a cushion and repeatedly sit in the same place, the fill is going to compress.
One great thing about many Verellen sofa cushions is that they’re upholstered so they can be flipped and rotated. You should actually flip and rotate your cushions periodically so that you’re distributing wear rather than sitting in exactly the same spot every day for years.
If you love the natural, relaxed appearance of linen and down, wonderful. That’s part of what you’re buying.
But if you know yourself and you want your sofa to look extremely crisp, tailored and virtually untouched year after year, tell us that before you order.
I would steer you toward a more structured cushion construction and a tightly woven textile that isn’t going to relax in the same way as a loose linen.
There’s still a Verellen sofa for you.
We just need to choose the materials and construction based on how you want your furniture to look after you’ve actually lived on it.
Verellen vs. Restoration Hardware: which is better?
Personally, I choose Verellen.
Verellen upholstery is made in North Carolina, and I think the craftsmanship, materials, tailoring and originality of the silhouettes put it into a different category.
Restoration Hardware has created a very recognizable luxury aesthetic, and there’s certainly a customer who loves that look.
But if I’m designing a room where I want the furniture to feel more distinctive, I gravitate toward Verellen.
It’s less ubiquitous. The silhouettes feel more original. The textile options are extraordinary. And the finished piece can feel much more personal.
If you’re investing in furniture because you want your home to feel individual rather than simply expensive, that’s where Verellen really shines for me.
Verellen vs. Lee Industries: which is better?
Both operate in the premium upholstery category, but if tailoring and silhouette are my priorities, I personally lean toward Verellen.
In pieces I’ve encountered, I’ve found Verellen’s attention to stitching, sewing and tailoring particularly impressive.
And aesthetically, Verellen’s silhouettes are one of the biggest reasons I specify the brand.
So if someone showed me both and said, “Monica, which would you put in your project?”
For tailoring and original design, I’m choosing Verellen.
Verellen vs. Four Hands: is Verellen worth the upgrade?
Here’s the deal:
Nothing quite compares to Verellen.
But I don’t think this has to be a Verellen-versus-Four Hands decision.
They’re at very different price points, and I love mixing them together.
You could do two Verellen host chairs at the heads of a dining table and Four Hands chairs around the rest.
Killer look.
You could do a Four Hands sofa with a pair of incredible Verellen chairs.
Killer look.
You could invest in a Verellen bed and use Four Hands nightstands.
Again: killer look.
This is actually one of my favorite ways to design when we’re balancing a budget.
Put the money into the Verellen piece where the silhouette, textile and craftsmanship are going to have the biggest visual impact. Then use Four Hands strategically around it.
You don’t have to choose one brand.
They can work beautifully together.
