Home Tour: Behind the Modern Cottage Aesthetic

Modern Cottage Home by Amethyst x Syler Construction

When Garret Syler of Syler Construction showed us his latest Ridgedale floor plan -- we knew this would be the perfect home to embrace the modern cottage aesthetic.

It's warm, and inviting and has moments like a beautiful foyer that separates the front door from the heart of the home.  We worked with their design team to be intentional about paint colors and light fixtures throughout the home.

This house is perched high on a hill with beautiful trees in view of the windows. The trees feel part of the space which made a modern cottage the perfect aesthetic for the space.  We believe when you are close to nature, your home inspires relaxation and joy.

What is the Modern Cottage aesthetic?

Modern cottage is different from a farmhouse vibe, it’s very linen-focused, features warm woods, and a variety of furnishing pieces that look amazing with nature views.

For the modern cottage look, we wanted to do a lighter look featuring jute rugs, layered rugs, warm white oak, and weathered pine.

At Amethyst, we believe it’s important in a new construction home to use pieces that are new and fresh and it's important to introduce some wabi-sabi and reclaimed elements for balance.  Sometimes when our clients build new and buy all-new furniture -- the design can lose some of the soul that comes from a curated home so that's why those raw elements are so important.

In the living room, we opted to put in a Donato oatmeal linen slipcover sofa. Made in California, this sofa is very casual and perfect for napping on a Sunday afternoon.

White Concrete Living Room Coffee Table Modern Cottage

We paired it with a Parra white concrete coffee table so it can be perfectly styled for different seasons and two boucle Aurora swivel chairs that are really comfortable for the whole family. For a finishing touch, we loved the look of this oversized wispy light fixture that feels grand and isn’t visually obtrusive.

Living Room Furniture Modern Cottage

Our favorite piece:
We can’t choose just one piece, but we are especially obsessed with the Beauty Surrounds art piece above the fireplace that pulls in a strong tree element, and the muted colors and complexity of the Onessa and Natural Monaco rugs

Foyer Furnishings Modern Cottage

Foyer

This home has a very intimate entry moment where you could pause a moment and set your purse and things down before you’re thrown into the living room. In this floor plan, we love that we were able to do a round table in the foyer for the flow that it creates and opted to ground it on a beautiful entry rug. The Kai Pathos rug is very nondescript and we just loved the matte look of the wool against the floors and Oak Torsion white oak table. We like mixing warm and cool tones. This foyer also features a textile gallery wall for a handmade element.

Our favorite piece:
The textile gallery wall has handmade elements. At Amethyst, we champion handmade items to celebrate artisans and the beauty that comes from nature to inspire peaceful and joyful homes.

Modern Cottage Style Master Bedroom

Primary Bedroom

For the primary bedroom, we wanted to do a classic white and black look and feel. Features a white denim slipcover April bed and Shadow Box nightstands to curate a classic look. Above the bed, we placed this Wildflower Stallions art piece for its optimistic and joyful vibes. This piece is quite magical with all the flowers and curates great energy in the room.
Primary Room Bedding

To complete the look, we added one of our favorite Amethyst Reign Ria hand-knotted rugs. We love styling rugs on carpets. For styling best practice, we like to make sure that the base of the rug is the same color as the carpet so it looks more intentional and is softer on the eyes.

Our favorite piece:
The April bed is our favorite piece– it’s beachy and comfortable. We love that you can take off the slipcover and put it in your washing machine to refresh it.
Modern Cottage Furnished Kitchen

Kitchen

In the kitchen, we opted for the Saldino stools and loved the matte look. They have a pretty cotton velvet fabric and a nice sturdy base, and they’re oh-so comfy! We selected the Dominic runner for its livability and durability in the space, and the colors coordinate well with the rugs in the kitchen, dining, living room, and foyer in this open floor plan.

Our favorite piece:
The Dominic rug is an Amethyst favorite and is perfect for kitchens because it handles spills and traffic beautifully.

Modern Cottage Furnished Dining Room

Dining Room

We intentionally opted to place the Augustine bench in the dining room. The Augustine dining bench is the type of banquette dining seat that everyone always fights over at dinner time because of its comfort. It’s the kind of seat that will make you never want to leave candid conversations at the dinner table.

Modern Cottage Dining Table

For this modern cottage vibe, we decided to mix and match the dining seating, pairing a banquette style bench with two Amethyst favorite modern coastal Antonia chairs and a reclaimed Wagner white wash dining table. Similarly to the rugs selected in the open floor space, we opted to place the Naturals Monaco Anthro hand-knotted rug to create a cohesive look between the variety of rugs in the open floor concept space.

Our favorite piece:
The Naturals Monaco Anthro hand-knotted rug is an Amethyst favorite! This beautiful toned rug can be styled layered on top of another rug, or by itself.

European Modern Office

Office

The office features a reclaimed waxed pine Reign desk with a pretty white-washed wooden Lewis chair. We chose the Lucy rug in the office because it had a similar base to the carpet, and we love placing rugs on the carpet.

We opted to add the Sinclair Round ottoman. At Amethyst, we believe pieces should be functional for living, and this boucle ottoman is a great addition for informal seating and can easily be introduced to creative studios as an extra seat in the house.

The Sinclair Round Ottoman is one of our favorite pieces because it can be mixed and matched and its firm, comfortable boucle fabric is perfect for informal seating in any space.

At Amethyst, we believe family homes should include intentional artisan pieces crafted for livability and durability. Whether your home has children or pets, we love pieces that are washable or use performance fabrics, and light fabrics and furnishings that are practical and durable for different families for the best of both worlds.
